The NEC DSX has a built-in music on hold feature that is included for free with the phone system.

They've found that when they have their music on hold productions professionally recorded, the studios usually send the recording in Mp3 or secure digital card format. With this external unit, it's a lot easier to load your music on hold programming. If you use the built-in music on hold feature, you have to connect to the phone system with the programming software, convert the file format into WAV, and upload the program. With the OHP-6000 you avoid all of these steps.
It comes down to a matter of preference - the OHP-6000 costs a little bit of money, but makes changing your music on hold production a lot easier than using the free NEC DSX built-in music on hold.
